2017 HomeBrewer Of the Year (HomeBOY)
The competition was intense, but when the points were tallied for the 2017 BHG HomeBOY, Darin Hamm emerged the winner! Congratulations, Darin, on an amazing year of homebrewing. Darin wins the prestige of going down in the annals of BHG history, as well as the honor of brewing a collaboration beer with our incredible host and suporter, Aslan Brewing Company.
For those unfamiliar, HomeBrewer Of the Year (HomeBOY) is our annual contest to determine the most prolific brewer in the club. Points are awarded for entering and winning our bimonthly club competitions, our annual Best of the Bay homebrew competition and eligible external competitions such as WAHA comps and the National Homebrewers Competition. Rules for points can be found on our website here: https://bellinghamhomebrewersguild.org/competitions/#bhg-homeboy
What does it take to win the coveted HomeBOY prize? From Darin’s impressive 35-point score this year, 19 of the points came from our local comps (bimonthly BHG comps and Best of the Bay). The other 16 points came from entering (and winning) other Washington competitions such as the Cascade Brewers Cup and the Farmstrong Wort Challenge.
If you’re interested in competing for this prestigious prize in 2018, I encourage you to enter every club comp (there’s still time to brew a dry stout for February 8th!), and keep an eye on the WAHA website for entry deadlines. There are two WAHA IPA competitions with entries due in February, so if you have an IPA in the keg it would be a good way to jump-start your points for 2018. Note that one comp, the Reuben’s IPA Idol requires an AHA membership. Sign up for the National Homebrewers Competition also requires an AHA membership and entry applications are open January 23-30 (NEXT WEEK).
Congrats to Darin on an amazing year of homebrewing excellence!
Cheers,
Joe Postma
