2024 Club Competition Schedule!
2024 Club Competition Schedule!
Hey everyone,It’s a new year, which means a new slate of club competitions, and I’m taking over as organizer this year (thanks to Justin Revelstoke for doing the job these past few years). Since we’re getting off to a somewhat late start and we want to give everyone plenty of time to fire up their kettles, our first club competition will take place at our March meeting. From there, we’ll have one every other month as usual, until the end of the year, when we’ll have our final two back-to-back in November and December.Inspired by a conversation with Jason Mantello, I’ve decided that the club comps this year will all be variations on a theme: homage beers. I’ve selected six classic commercial beers we all know and love, and your task for the club comp will be to cook up a clone. We’ll award people’s choice to the entry that tastes most like the original, or at least that best captures the spirit of the original (which we’ll also have available at the meeting for people to do side-by-side tasting). Here’s the calendar, along with the commercial beers you’ll be paying your respects to:
March: Full Sail Amber Ale
May: Deschutes Black Butte Porter
July: Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale
September: Brasserie Dupont Saison Dupont
November: Samuel Adams Boston Lager
December: North Coast Old Rasputin Imperial Stout
If you want to bring an extra bottle, we’ll also try to get some BJCP judges together after each meeting to fill out scoresheets for you, where we’ll be judging the beers by style. (We’ll let you choose the style you want it to be judged against, within reason. November’s beer, for example, might fit in several different lager categories, depending on how yours tastes.)Feel free to reach out if you have any questions — nealabram@gmail.com. Otherwise, happy new year and happy brewing!
